Morning Chanting and Meditation

The tools of meditation are chanting, sitting as well as questions and answers. These tools are used to help quiet the chatter of the mind in order to examine this question with clarity and focus.

Each morning prior to the daily intensive yoga practice Ana will use storytelling, chanting, sitting meditation to help trainees free their minds from their attachment to habitual patterns of thinking and the resulting habitual patterns of action. The freedom from habitual thinking will have an immediate effect on your yoga and in your life.

Daily Yoga Intensives

As the foundation of this course the daily intensive yoga practice with Ana and her teaching assistants will create a heightened sense of physical, emotional and spiritual awareness while challenging every muscle and cell in your body. Through a carefully constructed and rigorous Forrest Yoga series of asanas, Ana will open you to amazing depths and feelings of awareness. You will leave feeling cleansed, refreshed and alive. The intensives are a sanctuary where you can feel safe enough to open up, work through issues that may arise and go beyond your perceived limitations. You will learn about yourself and feel what it is like to have freedom in your own body and mind. The intensives are sure to bring each trainee to new levels within their yoga practice. Injuries are addressed so that each trainee experiences these classes as part of his or her own healing practice.

Training & Instruction

Daily five to six hour sessions of training and instruction comprise the afternoon portion of the course. Working from a comprehensive manual of approximately 300 pages, distilled from Ana's 30+ years of experience, trainees begin practice teaching on the first day - initially in small groups, eventually teaching beginning-level yoga students during the "Intro to Forrest Yoga" workshop. These skill-building exercises help trainees master the essential elements of teaching, such as: class sequencing, seeing and understanding physical structure and energy, the use of safe and effective hands-on adjustments, communication by verbal and non-verbal means, effective use of class dialogue and tone of voice as well as the continued development of a more engaging presence and self-awareness in your class.

During the course two weekend workshops titled, an Introduction to Forrest Yoga, will be offered to the public. Trainees will team teach these workshops, rotating between teaching class, assisting and adjusting all the while Ana and her teaching assistants will be supervising. These workshops will be videotaped for review. This hands-on experience leads to informative feedback for trainees as they develop their teaching style and skills, regardless of their teaching experience. Students may also have an opportunity for unsupervised teaching in the community through Forrest Yoga's outreach programs.

Forrest Yoga Business Workshop

A Yoga Business Course will be offered during the two day break in the training program. The cost is included in the overall tuition and the course is a requirement for completion of the Teacher Training. Teacher trainees will learn how to manifest their yoga dreams and connect their passions with their yoga teaching. It will include how to create your own vision statement, and insight into how you relate (or don't) to money, business, and financial dealings. You will also get practical information on marketing and promotion, accounting basics, insurance and legal considerations, and business planning. Whether you are 'new' to business or want to refresh your business acumen, there is something for you in this workshop. It's about linking your passion to business, because "Passionate business is good business."

Video Review

Each trainee will be videotaped while teaching the Introduction to Forrest Yoga Workshop. The videotapes are then reviewed as a group. This process may seem intimidating at first, but the supportive and nurturing atmosphere allows you to feel comfortable with feedback and self-reflection. The group discussions and individual feedback from Ana and her teaching assistants make this a valuable learning experience as you continue to develop your teaching style and skills. You will see firsthand how you are teaching and if your words and actions are congruent and clear. Video review is an extremely effective learning tool, allowing great strides in communication, body language and instruction to be made in a short amount of time.

Group Process

The Forrest Yoga Teacher Training program, due to its experiential nature, employs a myriad of group processes so that trainees may absorb the course material in a permanent way. Group teaching activities develop the skills necessary to integrate the material presented during the course. Group forums are utilized for philosophical inquiries into ethics, boundaries and teaching integrity; while small group sessions with each instructor are used to practice sequencing, teaching and provide feedback. Based upon the principles of the Native American talking circle, "Opening Circles" also provide opportunities for trainees to come together to share their feelings, struggles, victories and overall experiences with the program. It is also an occasion to learn to speak your truth and listen open-heartedly, without judgment to each others' truths. These group processes are an integral part of your growth, both as a teacher and human. You will learn tools that empower you when faced with life along with its challenges and rewards.

Training Manual

Trainees receive a comprehensive, 300 page training manual that includes material relating to: postures, adjustments, sequencing, injuries, lesson plans, healing, nutrition and more. The manual is a substantial and detailed resource for trainees to use both during and after the training. It includes several of Ana's articles as well as material she has written exclusively for the Teacher Training course. Upon successful completion of the teaching program, the manual will be yours to take home.

Anatomy Course

Immediately preceding the 24 day course, Ellen Heed, teaches her 20-hour functional anatomy course. A three-day intensive taught in conjunction with Forrest Yoga Foundation Teacher Training which combines anatomical instruction with honing perceptual skills to better address the individual needs of yoga students. Who knew learning anatomy could be this much fun?.

The course satisfies the 20 hour anatomy requirement for both Forrest Yoga certification and also for Yoga Alliance certification. This course is offered at an additional cost. See event listing for more details or call the SHAKTI West at (206) 297-9642 for the training you are interested in attending.

Tending the Sacred Fire: Living Yoga Sadhana

Within Tantra, Ayurveda, and Krisnamacharya's teachings of Vinyasa, we thrive when we find the form of yoga practice that fuels, nourishes and illumines what is needed to evolve our life. How do you practice when you are feeling the natural human emotions such as stuck, overwhelmed, stressed, shut-down, bored, lethargic, mechanical, tense, etc. that inhibit the flow of yoga. How does yoga practice and living yoga form a continual circle of transformation?  All of these practical realities of adult life center around the metaphor of "tending the fire".

Based on Shivas innovative program 30-day Living Yoga Sadhana Program, we will explore Four Paths ofPractice: Bhakti (the power of love and devotion), Vira (awakening the fire of ones potential), Shakti (unleashing the creative power), and Shanti Sadhana (living peace) as ways of cultivating our inner light.  Beginning with a collective fire ceremony, we will explore each one of these Four Paths of Practice for a weekend of rejuvenating practice to then create a living yoga sadhana to balance and activate your life.

Weekend Flow will include:

Opening Introduction and Fire Ceremony

Vira Sadhana

Bhakti Sadhana

Shakti Sadhana

Shanti Sadhana

Suggested preparatory Reading/DVD: The Direct Path by Andrew Harvey and Daily Energy Flow DVD by Shiva Rea
