Saturday Ballard Art Walk
17 Haiku
Black-and-white infrared photographs by Teresa Tamura
April 12 – June 12, 2008
Artist Reception- Saturday, April 12, 6 – 9 pm
Haiku, a Japanese verse form, guided my selection
and organization of these photographs. In English, haiku are
written in three lines to echo the three parts of a haiku
in Japanese that traditionally consists of 17 (five, seven
and five) sounds.
For this exhibition, I selected 17 infrared photographs spanning
a time frame from my first trip to Japan in 1993 to the present.
The images were taken during visits to Japanese gardens in
Japan, Canada, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and Washington,
D.C.
Research tells us that observing nature, in person or through
photographs, is a means to good health. Historically, Japanese
gardens were created as a refuge from the growing complexity
of daily life. My visual and emotional attachment to Japanese
gardens comes from the first Japanese garden I saw –
the one in my grandparents’ backyard.

Drawing from devotional sanskrit mantras, traditional
spirituals, native american chants, african and sufi devotional
songs, Steve invites you to celebrate the breath and spirit of singing.
This is a wonderful opportunity to be nourished with the healing
vibrations of voice in a relaxed, friendly, social environment.
Steve Gold is well-known in
the Seattle area and you will leave feeling truly inspired and full
of life. His upbeat energy and enthusiasm encourages us to discover
our voice and leaves us with a sense of joy. Satsang is a Sanskrit
word that means a gathering of people in a “truthful community”
where you have the opportunity to enjoy feeling a part of something
greater than yourself. Chanting is considered the “Bhakti”
path of yoga or yoga of signing devotional praises. You don’t
have to know anything about this beautiful path but show up and
join in however it moves you. We invite you to join our dynamic
community in sharing conversation, music, singing, and just connecting
with new, interesting people. We look forward to seeing you there.
There is a $10 donation towards supporting the musicians of this
great event.
